OUR PASTORS
Senior
Pastor - Mark Harris.
Mark was born and grew up in Halifax and
spent his formative years at Fairview Bible Chapel, the precursor to Grace
Chapel. After studying English Literature and Political Science at Dalhousie
University, Mark earned his education degree at M.S.V.U. After teaching high
school for a few years, Mark became involved in student ministry with Inter-Varsity
Christian Fellowship for twenty years. His theological training was at Acadia
Divinity College and Regent College. Mark is the author of three books, including
most recently The Light that Lives in Darkness (Gaspereau Press, 2006).
Mark has a passion for encouraging people to grow in their faith. He loves
to read novels, to listen to a wide range of music, and to follow (with great
passion!) the Detroit Red Wings. Mark and his wife Adrienne live downtown where
they love to garden and to go for walks in the streets and parks of historic
Halifax.
Associate Pastor of Congregational Care - Dr. Maurice Nanton.
Maurice
grew up in the Caribbean on the island of St. Vincent. After studying Science
and then Medicine in Britain, Maurice went on to specialize in Pediatric Cardiology,
working for decades at the Izaak Walton Killiam Hospital in Halifax. During
those years, Maurice exercised many forms of leadership at Grace Chapel. As
his career in Cardiology wound down, Maurice did extensive course work in the
area of Clinical Pastoral Education.. Maurice is also involved in prison ministry
and has led Twelve Step Recovery Groups. He has a passion for meeting with
people one on one, listening to their unique stories, looking for signs of
God’s presence there. Maurice loves reading, jogging and gardening and has
a remarkably extensive collection of the music of Johnny Cash! He and his wife
Barbara live in Rockingham.
OUR LEADERSHIP TEAM
Grace Chapel is led by a team of elders who are the church’s spiritual and pastoral leaders. In keeping with Biblical teaching about the role of elders, they seek to live with integrity, and to model the life and love of Jesus to the congregation. Our elders endeavour to listen to God, to listen to the congregation, and to lovingly challenge it toward a deeper life of faith and united witness to the world.
Our pastors have special areas of responsibility (e.g., preaching, spiritual formation, congregational care, youth ministry), but no greater authority in leadership . We are committed to teamwork and partnership together.
The nelders are assisted by a deeply committed team of ministry heads who exercise leadership in many areas of congregational life.
OUR CONGREGATIONAL CARE TEAM
Assisting the elders and pastors are a team of congregational care leaders and a team of small group leaders. The best way to get connected and be cared for at Grace Chapel is to join a small group.
OUR CHURCH STAFF
Our church staff include Alice Walsh, church secretary, and Marilyn MacGowan,
our volunteer church librarian. The Chapel Office is open from 9:00 a.m. to
5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. Alice is available to answer questions you have
or to help you get in contact with someone on our pastoral team. |
